Super Special Big Island Ka'u
Product Info
Oh boy, this is EXTREMELY limited supply coffee- why?! Because this coffee was hand-delivered to us from our friend John Wacker- (this is literally what he could fit in his suitcase.)
The True Ka‘u story begins in 1894, when J.C. “Papa” Seale planted the very first coffee plants in the Ka‘u district on the Island of Hawai‘i. Papa’s Ka‘u coffee immediately earned rave reviews.*
It soon became the brew of choice for many cowboys, or ‘paniolo’. However, the rise of sugar plantations forced Papa to compete for farmhands, and he reluctantly had to abandon his coffee dream.
A hundred years later, the closing of the Pāhala sugar mill opened the land once again. Papa’s great-grandson breathed new life into his lost dream, and today that dream is carried on by Papa’s great-great-granddaughter through the True Ka‘u Coffee Company.
Grown on the southern slopes of Mauna Loa above the town of Pāhala, at the ideal elevation of 1,800 to 2,000 feet, our coffee enjoys morning sun followed by the afternoon rain showers that Ka‘u is famous for. This climate allows the beans to develop rich, deeply distinct flavors, enhanced by the unique volcanic soil.
True Ka‘u is picked by hand, pulped, and sun-dried using only renewable energy. Rain and sun are the only “additives” to this coffee. Now, 125 years after the first coffee was planted in Ka‘u, straight from the “Aina”, you are about to experience the True Ka‘u difference—coffee grown by the descendants of those original 1894 plantings.
A source of pride for generations of our family!
* From the Hawaiian Gazette, September 17, 1897 (page 5): “A party of ten men went up to J.C. Searle’s coffee plantation in Kau on the last trip of the Mauna Loa to that district and found there specimens of the finest coffee they have ever seen. Mr. Searle has 25 acres, upon which are planted ten different kinds of coffee. The berries are very large and of the most excellent quality.”
